Ag Facts Radio Program - January

Monthly Radio Program on KUVR Radio.

The holiday season is over and that means it is winter meeting time. Every January and February, UNL Extension provides many educational opportunities in the crops and livestock areas. Most producers should have received a brochure entitled “West Central Nebraska Ag-Related Programs.” If you would like a copy, simply stop by any UNL Extension Office and ask for a copy. There are also several copies available at most Ag related businesses in Phelps and Gosper Counties.

I will highlight just a few of the programs coming up in the area. A Cornhusker Economics Management and Outlook Conference will be held on January 29 at the Elks in Cozad. There is a $25 preregistration fee and the program will run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. For more information contact Dave Stenberg at (308)324-5501.

The Holdrege Water Conference will be held on January 31 at the Ag Center in Holdrege. There is no registration fee and the program will run from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Topics include irrigation management, crop water use of various tillage systems, water banking in Nebraska and Kansas, and weather forecast for the 2008 cropping season.

A Beef Production Workshop will be held in Elwood at the Legion Hall on February 5. The program will run from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm and will include topics on grazing systems, capturing domestic and foreign beef markets, supplemental protein for beef cows and using distillers grains in a cow-calf operation.

An Irrigation and Energy Conservation Workshop for Corn Growers will be held at the Ag Center in Holdrege on February 12. The program is free of charge and will run from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. Topics include methods to optimize your irrigation water and irrigation dollars.

The Nebraska No-till Conference is scheduled for February 21 at the Ag Center in Holdrege. This is a free program, but pre-registration is requested. Featured speakers include Dwayne Beck-Prairie Lakes Research Farm in Pierre, SD, Keith Thompson – Farmer/No-Tiller from Osage City, KS, Duane Lange-Farmer/No-Tiller from Ord, NE and Paul Jasa- UNL Extension Engineer.

For more information on any Extension educational program or to pre-register, Contact the UNL Extension in Holdrege at (308)995-4222 or in Elwood at (308)785-2390.

This has been Chuck Burr, your University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Educator. I hope you have a great day.
