Department G: Poultry, Rabbit, Cats, Dogs, Pet Show

Quality Assurance Certification: It is required as of 2008 that all exhibitors receive Quality Assurance training or testing through a UNL Extension program prior to the fair.
- (A) HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: Health certificate not required for poultry.
- (B )A 4-H Member may have up to 5 entries, no more than 3 entries per class number.
- (C)Breeds-To be eligible for breed exhibition, cockerel, pullet, cock or hen chicken entries must be fair representatives of one of the breeds listed in the American Standard of Perfection. Sizes & weights of exhibits will be considered.
- (D) Entries must be 4-H Project Birds - All poultry exhibited must be grown in a 4-H members project
- (E) Trio - A pen of egg production birds can be hybrids, crossbred or purebred and shall consist of 3 sexually mature females. Egg production females will be judged for production qualities only and need not necessarily conform to breed standards.
- (F)Rules for Bantam and other pouthry-The rules for standard size chickens apply equally to bantans, waterfowl and turkey where applicable.
- (G) 4-H'ers will be in appropriate 4-H attire as stated in the 4-H Regulations in the front of this book.

Div. 70-Class 901 Poultry Showmanship (Phelps & Gosper)
- Any 4-H'er entered in the 4-H Poultry project with a bird may enter showmanship.
- The participant may use any bird they choose as long as it was raised and trained by the 4-H'er.
- Basis for judging-Showmanship is based on grooming and training of the bird and the appeaarance and behaior of the exhibitor. The exhibitor must vocally explain the steps in their routine and the merit of the bird. Primarily, showmanship is the skill of the exhibitor in presenting and explaining the bird before the judge. The excellence of the bird is not considered in scoring.
- There will be a four minute time limit to complete the showmanship presentation. Exhibitors will be timed.
- The judge may or may not ask questions of the exhibitor at the close of the routine.

DIV. 70: POULTRY BREED ENTRY

Not more than four animals may be entered by one exhibitor. All rabbits will be judged with both rabbit and 4-H'er present at the rabbit show. Rabbits at the county fair do not need permanent ID numbers. However, all rabbits, except fryers, must have permanent ID numbers or names in their ear to be eligible for State Fair. Rabbits used in State Fair Showmanship must also be tatooed and registered. Ownership must have been certified for State Fair on official 4-H ownership affidavits (4HF103) by June 15. DIV. 80: SHOWMANSHIP
4-H members enrolled in Rabbit Showmanship will present an oral presentation about the rabbit to the judge. Information on rabbit showmanship is found in 4-H 339, Rabbits, Rabbits, Rabbits and videocassette, 40-vc-16, Rabbit Showmanship. Both are available from the Extension Office.

The entries in the cat show are not judged according to breed standards. Classes will be judged on the handler's appearance, grooming and coordination of the cat, knowledge of the cat and handling ability. The cat's health and general condition will be judged. Special coat and trims will not count except for being cleaned and neatly brushed.
Limit of three exhibits, may be in the same class.
A Grand Champion-Cat will be selected from the top exhibits in each class.
- A. Eligibility: To be eligible to show at the Cat Show, the exhibitor must be currently enrolled in the 4-H Cat Project. Kittens under 3 months of age will not be accepted. (At State Fair kittens must be at least 4 months of age.) If the judge decides to judge the cat in the cage, no points will be lost by the cat.
- B. Entry Deadline: There is pre-entry for the 4-H Cat Show.
- C. Housing: Cats may be brought to the fair in carriers or on leashes. Exhibitors may want to provide a cover for the carrier to prevent their cat from seeing other cats. Cats must be removed from the show area after the show. Cats will not be housed on the fairgrounds overnight.
- D. Cat Show Classes: Exhibitors will be asked to give a short presentation to the judge explaining the care and upkeep of their cat. Cat entries will be judged according to the handler's appearance, grooming and coordination of the cat, knowledge of the cat and handling ability. The cat's health and general condition will be judged. Special coat and trims will not count except for being cleaned and neatly brushed.
- E. Health: Cats should be free of fleas, ticks, ear mites, ring-worm, any internal and external parasite and infectious disease. If any signs of these external parasites are presented, exhibitors will be asked to leave without being allowed into the show area. It is highly recommended that a veterinary check is performed or preventative measures are taken prior to the show to ensure the animal is free of external parasites. ALL DECISIONS OF THE SHOW OFFICIALS ARE FINAL. If the cat shows the possibility of being contagious, it will be considered a danger to the other cats in the show and will not be allowed to show. Cats that pose a danger to others will not be allowed to enter the building.
Cats are required to be current on their vaccinations of Rabies, distemper, panleucopenia, rhine tracheitis, calici virus. Cats must either have a current feline leukemia vaccination or proof of a negative test within 180 days of the show. Proof of vaccinations must be submitted to the Extension Office and is requested by June 15. Vaccinations must be current on show date. Participants should have their veterinarian fill out and sign the "Nebraska State Fair Cat Vaccination Record Form" to show proof of vaccination. This is the form that will be used for the county fair and needs to be submitted prior to the show, requested by June 15. Exhibitors will not be allowed to show without a signed Vaccination record form.
4-H'ers vaccinating their own cats must provide proof by including a statement from their veterinarian on the Vaccination Record Form along with a signature of the veterinarian that these vaccinations were given and are current. A rabies vaccination is federally mandated to be given by a Certified Veterinarian ONLY. This vaccination must be current and include a veterinarian signature on the Vaccination Record Form.
If the cat is not declawed, the claws must be clipped. This will be a point of judging during the competition. No expectant or nursing mother cats may be entered in the show.
- F. Location: The Cat Show will be conducted from the arena on the Phelps/Gosper County Fairgrounds, or at a site selected by the show officials.
- G. Clean Up: All exhibitors must clean up their own exhibit areas.
- H. Dress Code: Exhibitors are required to wear the official 4-H dress as listed in the current Premium Book. Long pants are required. While hard soled shoes are not required, exhibitors are required to wear closed toes shoes. No flip flops or sandals are allowed. 4-H'ers will be judged on the neatness of their appearance. This includes but is not limited to; shirt tucked in, appropriate size of clothing, tied shoe laces, etc. Individuals not meeting these requirements will be lowered one (1) ribbon placing.
- I. Leash Law: All cats must be shown on a leash and be on a leash at any time they are removed from the carrier/cage.

- Classes may be broken down further by age at the discretion of the show management. There will be a State Fair Cat show in 2008. Check the State Fair Premium Book for all rules and regulation of that show.
Dept G Div. 974 PET SHOW

Animals eligible for the show include gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, other pocket pets, tropical fish, parakeets, cockatiel and other birds, turtles, amphibians, etc. This department cannot duplicate animals that are exhibited in other departments in the fair. Therefore, no dogs, cats, rabbits or poultry will be permitted in the show. Classes may be broken down further at the discretion of the show management.
SHOW PROCEDURE : Exhibitors must be present at time of showing. Animals must be housed in a cage (when appropriate) at all times of the show unless asked to remove them by the judge. If being shown in a travel cage, exhibitors should bring photographs of the animal's normal habitat.
Each exhibitor will be asked to give a short "showmanship" presentation on their animal. The characteristics, health, and care of the animal should be provided in this presentation. Following the presentation, exhibitors will be interviewed on their knowledge of their animal and its care.
- The judge will evaluate the participant on the following basis: animal health and wellbeing, cage evaluation (appropriateness of travel housing as well as description of the everyday housing), and overall knowledge and presentation skills. Other topics to consider will be proper food and water facilities and handling ability, where appropriate.

- Participant should bring animal, adequate cage and accessories, completed health certificate for ferrets, and pictures of normal display if appropriate.
- Exhibits must be pre-entered.
- NUMBER OF ENTRIES PER EXHIBITOR: Exhibitors are allowed up to three entries. Entries may be in separate classes or may all be in the same class.
- DISQUALIFIED ANIMALS: Any animal showing signs of sickness, disease, or parasite infestation will be eliminated from the show and must be removed from the fairgrounds.
- AGE OF ANIMALS: All animals for county fair must be weaned prior to show. There are minimum age requirements for animals who wish to participate at the Nebraska State Fair and the State Fair minimum animal ages are listed below.
- i. Ferrets: 12 weeks
- ii. Chinchillas: 7 weeks
- iii. Guinea pigs: 4 weeks
- iv. Gerbils, hamsters, mice, rats: 4 weeks
- v. Hedgehogs: 5 weeks
- SHOW SCHEDULE The class schedule with exhibitor and show time will be completed after entries are received.
- DRESS CODE: Exhibitors in the Pet Show are required to wear the official 4-H dress according to the 4-H Rules and Regulations during the judging of their exhibit. Long pants are required. - STATE FAIR PET SHOW: A State Fair Small Pet Show will be conducted. Check the State Fair Premium book for details. Pre-entry is required for this State Fair Event.
Division 700 & 701: DOG
Purple 2.50, Blue 2.25, Red 1.75, White 1.25 Refer to "Guidelines For Nebraska Dog Shows" for show procedures. This show will follow standards as set forth in this guide available from your Extension Office. Those procedures described in "Guidelines for Nebraska 4-H Dog Shows" as part of Nebraska 4-H and Phelps County are not necessarily different from these County Fair rules. Pre-entry is required.
DOG ELIGIBILITY: Exhibitor should provide primary care and training for the dog. The dog should reside with the exhibitor or be cared for by the exhibitor the majority of the year. Dogs must be owned by the immediate family members who reside in the same household.
OBEDIENCE LEVEL: The same dog may NOT complete in more than one regular obedience class.
VACCINATION: All dogs must be immunized for Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo and Rabies. The Nebraska State Fair Dog Show Vaccination Form must be filled out and signed by a veterinarian and returned to the Extension Office. This form will be used for Phelps and Gosper County and the Nebraska State Fair. Vaccination papers are requested by June 15 current year and must be current on county fair show date. Only dogs with this current certificate on file will be allowed to show at the dog show.
ADVANCEMENT IN OBEDIENCE CLASSES: Dogs receiving a purple in Beginning Novice or Novice Obedience must advance to the next level of obedience. Beginning Novice must progress to Novice and Novice must progress to Graduate Novice if a purple ribbon is received. There is no limit to the number of times a dog may be in the Graduate Novice, Open or Utility classes. The dog will stay in its highest attained class. A "new" handler" with an experienced dog will enter such class. The "Guidelines for Nebraska 4-H Dog Shows" will be followed when placing purple ribbon exhibits.
DISQUALIFIED DOGS: Females in season will not be permitted to be shown. Overly aggressive dogs may be disqualified at the discretion of the judge or superintendent. Lame or crippled dogs will not be permitted to show if it is determined by a show superintendent that it is affecting the health of the dog.
AGE OF DOG: A dog that is exhibited at the County Fair must be 6 months or older.
DRESS CODE: Exhibitors are required to wear the official 4-H dress. Closed toed shoes with a non-slip sole are required. No flip-flops or sandals are allowed.
BAITING: Baiting with food or a toy is not permitted and is cause for disqualification. Handlers may use baiting action without food or toys in showmanship. The judge has the authoritiy to disqualify violators.
SHOW ORDER: The order of the show will be: Agility, Beginning Novice Obedience, Advanced Obedience Classes, Junior Showmanship, Intermediate Showmanship and Senior Showmanship.
EXHIBITOR RESPONSIBILITY: Dogs are not allowed on the floor except while in the show ring. Cleanup shall be the EXHIBITOR'S RESPONSIBILITY. This includes all areas. Non-entered dogs and puppies are not allowed on the arena floor.
DIVISION 700: SHOWMANSHIP
Each class will be judged on handler's appearance (10%), grooming and conditioning of dog (20%), coordination of the dog and handler (50%), and general knowledge (20%).
- Class 901-Junior Showmanship - 8-10 years of age by January 1, current year.
- Class 902-Intermediate Showmanship -11-13 years of age by January 1, current year.
- Class 903-Senior Showmanship - 14-19 years of age by January 1, current year.
DIVISION 701: OBEDIENCE CLASSES
BEGINNING NOVICE: All exercises must be performed on a six-foot leash. Dogs must heel including figure 8; come on recall; stand for examination; long sit for one minute; and long down for three minutes. The leash may lay on the floor in front of the dog or be held by the handler. A Grand Champion and Reserve Champion will be selected from the overall top two exhibits in the Beginning Novice.
- Class 10-Division A-Beginning Novice- Handler and the dog being shown are both in their first year of dog show experience.
- Class 20-Division B- Beginning Novice - Handler and/or dog have been in dog show experience for more than one year.
- Class 30-Novice- Dogs must heel on leash including figure 8; heal free; stand for examination off leash; heel free; come on recall off leash; long sit for one minute off leash; and long down for three minutes off leash.
- Class 40 - Graduate Novice - Dogs must heel on leash;
heel free including figure 8; drop on recall; stand for examination off leash; long sit for three minutes; and long down for five minutes, both with handler out of sight.
- Class 50 - Open - All exercises off leash. Heel free and figure 8; drop on recall; retrieve on flat; retrieve over high jum; broad jump; long sit for three minutes; and long down for five minutes, both with handler out of sight. Refer to 4-H 419, Guidelines for Nebraska 4-H Dog Shows for jump heights/distances.
- Class 60 - Utility - The dog will perform five exercies; the signal exercise; the scent discrimination exercise with leather and metal objects; the direct retrieve; moving stand and examination; directed jumping; and the group stand for examination. Exhibitors must supply their own scent articles and gloves for the directed retrieve.
DIVISION 701 - AGILITY
- Class +901 - Beginning Level Agility - This class is open to all dogs and their handlers who are in the Beginning Novice A and B obedience levels. Exercise will be perfomred "on leash". A modified agility course will be utilized. Ribbon placings only for Beginning Level Agility.
- Class +902 Agility - Dogs particiapting in the Agility Class will have attained a minimum obedience level of Novice Obedience. Dogs will complete the established agility course.
