Phelps-Gosper 2008 Premium Book - Department G - Large Animal Projects

Department G: Animals

2008 Health Requirements: Under no circums-tances may animals under quarantine be exhibited. Only animals not showing signs of infectious or contagious diseases will be allowed to show. Animals that have active ringworm, visible warts or abscesses, will not be allowed entry in the Phelps or Gosper County Fair for exhibition. Any animals with such will not be allowed to remain on the premises.

QUALITY ASSURANCE TRAINING: All exhibitors in beef, dairy cattle, goats, sheep, swine, rabbit and poultry must have completed an approved food animal quality assurance training program. All exhibitors must have received Quality Assurance Certification through a UNL Extension based program prior to the fair. Program attendance or completion of a test in the county extension office is required. Completion of training will be certified by county extension staff.

NEBRASKA ORIGIN:

  • Beef & Dairy Cattle: See health certificate requirements, and ringworm and wart policy and in addition: (A) Tuberculosis-no test required to exhibit; (B) Brucellosis-no test required to exhibit Sheep & Goats: See health certificate requirements and ringworm and abscess policy. (A)Identification: All sheep and goats being exhibited, except wethers, need to be individually identified with USDA official ID. Under no circumstances may sheep and goats be exhibited which originate from scrapie-source flocks or scrapie-infected flocks.
  • Swine: (A) Swine shall originate directly from any herd not under quarantine for pseudorabies, and 1.) A Stage IV or V county; or 2.) a pseudorabies qualified herd, or 3.) Be individually tested and classified negative for pseudorabies within 30 days prior to exhibition.
  • Horses: 4-H horses only used in live animal demonstrations. See health certificate requirements. No Coggins test required.
  • Poultry: Health certificate not required for poultry. No additional testing requirements.

Division 11 - MARKET BEEF

To be eligible for purple ribbon awards, market steers must gain 2.0 pounds per day and heifers 1.8 pounds per day from the spring weigh-in. (Minimum Gain in GOSPER ONLY.) All market beef may be mouthed for age. Any cattle having permanent teeth will not be allowed to show. No muzzles or similar devices will be allowed on beef exhibits at the County Fair. Premiums: Purple 7.50 Blue 7.00 Red 5.50 White 4.00

    Gosper and Phelps County Fair minimum weights: Market Heifers-1000 lbs., Market Steers-1000 lbs. If market animals do not meet the minimum weights, animals will be shown in classes which no purple ribbons or championship honors will be awarded.

Any breeding heifer project animal enrolled in 4-H is eligible to show. Breeding Heifers must be born in 2007. Premium: P- 7.50, B- 7.00, R-5.50, W-4.00

BEEF SPECIALS Nebraska Charolais Association will make an engraved plaque for Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer, Market Heifer or Breeding Heifer, provided they are sired by a Charolais bull. **A trophy will be presented to the 4-H exhibitor of the best registered Polled Hereford Heifer. Animals must be registered in ownership to the 4-H member. This award will be presented by the American Polled Hereford Association and Nebraska Pollettes.

County Fair minimum weight: 100 lbs Market lambs not meeting minimum weight requirements will be shown in classes in which no purple awards or championships are awarded.

New for 2008: All Market Sheep to be shown at State Fair and Aksarben MUST have hair sample for DNA on file. Deadline for DNA is the same as for ownership affidavits -June 15.

Grooming Rule: Sheep must be closely shorn at the time of check-in so that any club lamb fungus or ringworm is visible. Premiums: P-$4, B-$3.75, R-$3.00, W-$2.25

Div. 35 SWINE Carcass Contest - Phelps only

  • Class 906 - Swine Carcass Contest.Premiums: Purple-4.00, Blue 3.75, Red 3.00, White 2.25. The swine carcass contest is open to all hogs shown in the live 4-H Swine Show. All market hogs will be measured with realtime ultrasound at the time of weigh-in. These measurements, plus carcass weight will be used to calculate % lean. An exhibitor will have his/her highest placing swine carcass entry entered in the carcass contest.
  • Hogs must be 230 pounds or more live weight.
  • Hog carcasses must have a minimum loin eye area of 4.50 square inches.
  • Superintendents of the show will award ribbons based upon percent lean.
  • Animals on which complete identification and information cannot be made will be awarded ribbons as deemed appropriate by the Superintendents.

Div. 40 DAIRY SHOWMANSHIP

Purple $6.00, Blue 5.75, Red 4.50, White 3.25

  • Class 9: The 4-H Dairy Show is open to grade and registered dairy animals. Grade & registered dairy animals will be shown together. Animals without registration information or with incomplete identification will be shown as grade animals. Dairy animals must be identified in accordance wit 4-H rules prior to June 15 of current calendar year.

    A 4-H member is limited to three diary animals. If the three qualify as a Junor her, they may be shown in a Herd Class. As numbers warrant, animals will be shown by age class and breed.

DAIRY HERD

Exhibitors in the Dairy Herd class will enter three females. At least one of the three must be a cow that has freshened and has been fresh long enough to have a projected 305 day M.E. At least one animal must qualify as bred by exhibitor, and all three must be of the same breed. They must pre-enterto qualify.

Division 50 DAIRY GOAT

Deleted from 2007 Nebraska State Fair; Phelps and Gosper County exhibits only. Premiums: Purple 4.00, Blue 3.75, Red 3.00, White, 2.25.

A 4-H member is limited to three dairy goats. Dairy goats to be eligible to be shown, must be properly identified prior to June 15 of the current year.

Dairy Goats will be shown by breed and age where necessary.

Dairy Goats can not be shown in meat goat class and meat goats can not be shown in dairy class.

The objective of the 4-H Meat Goat project is to provide youth with life skills of being responsible, making decisions, planning, organizing and working with others. Most of all, the project member will learn about raising and feeding meat goats. The meat goat project is designed for animals showing meat qualities such as the goats with the Boer influence; no hair, dairy or miniature goats will be included in the project. Meat goats must follow all other county fair livestock project rules. Meat goats must be identified by June 15 of the current year. Goats will be weighed on entry day and should be a minimum of 45 pounds and a maximum of 110 pounds. After weighing, goats will be divided into weight classes depending on the number of entries and at the superintenden'ts discretion. Exhibitors may enter a maximum of three goats. All goats must be carrying all milk teeth at the time of weigh-in. All goats must have horns blunted. Only wether and female kids may be shown - no billies.

Dairy Goats can not be shown in meat goat class and meat goats can not be shown in dairy class. Milk teeth will be checked at weigh-in.

SHOWMANSHIP-Division 55

Division +972 BUCKET CALF

Premium :Purple-$3.50, Blue $3; Red $2.50; White $2 The Bucket Calf Class is open to 4-H'ers 8-11 years of age on January 1 of the current calendar year. The Bucket calf to be shown must be born between Jan. 1 and May 1 of the current calendar year. Calves may be male or female; and of dairy breeds, beef breeds or crossbred. Calves are to be fed on bucket or bottle and/or dry feed. Calves are to be away from real or substitute mothers from May 31. Placings will be made on a combined score of 1/3 of total score on each of: A) Completed Bucket Calf Record Sheet to date; B) Oral questions asked by a judge on the day of the show and C) presentation of the bucket calf in the show arena to the judge for the day. A 4-H Exhibitor is limited to one (1) Bucket Calf. The class may be divided by the age of the exhibitor or age of the calf.

2nd Year BUCKET CALF

Premiums: Purple-$3.50, Blue $3; Red $2.50; White $2 A second year bucket calf has the options to show as Second Year Bucket Calf, Market Beef or Breeding Beef Classes. 4-H members who have kept and cared for their First Year Bucket calf from the previous year can show their animal as a Second Year Bucket Calf OR it may be entered in the appropriate market or breeding beef class. If the calf is shown as a Second Year Bucket calf, the animal can not be entered in a Market or Breeding Beef Class.

Division +973 CLOVER KIDS BUCKET CALF

  • GOSPER ONLY, Class 902: No Premiums Awarded. The Clover Kids Bucket Calf Class is open to 4-H'ers 5-8 years of age on January 1 of the current calendar year. The Bucket Calf to be shown must be born between January 1 and May 1 of the current calendar year. Calves may be male or female, and of dairy breeds, beef breeds or crossbred. Calves are to be fed on bucket or bottle and/or dry feed. Calves are to be away from real or substitute mother from May 31. Participants in the Gosper County Clover Kids Bucket Calf Project will exhibit their calf at the fair during the Clover Kids Bucket Calf Show. They must complete a record sheet specific to this project and answer questions asked by an appointed individual. The Clover Kid Members won't be judged in any way and each will receive a participation ribbon. The 4-H Clover Kids Exhibitor is limited to one (1) Bucket Calf (Gosper County project).

HERDSMANSHIP

Herdsmanship Rules:

  • A. Herdsmanship Responsibility: Herdsmanship duties are responsibility of exhibitors rather than leaders or parents.
  • B. Herdsmanship begins at the time the division of livestock (cattle, sheep and swine) is to be in place and ends the night prior to the 4-H Livestock Auction for both Gosper and Phelps counties.
  • C. Herdsmanship may be judged at any time between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. At least one exhibitor should be present at these times.
  • D. Divisions will be judged separately. Divisions include: Cattle (Beef and Dairy); Sheep and Goats; Swine.
  • E. Animals should be in their stalls or pens between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. except for weighing, washing and showing. All pens should be clearly identified with exhibitor names and animal information.
  • F. Stalls and pens should be cleaned and rebedded between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • G. Scores will be posted at the livstock office of the fair after each herdsmanship check within a reasonable time.
  • H. Hersdmanship scores will be based on the following scoring guide: (1) Animals clean at all times with grooming apparent. (2) Animals adequately cared for with proper feeding, clean and proper amount of bedding and adequate feeding equipment. Beef animals securely tied with 18-20 inches lf lead. Stalls and pens must be cleaned before 9 a.m. (3) Tack and feed area clean and neatly arranged. Fork handles and similar equipment kept down. (4) Proper courtesy and conduct shown by exhibitors at all times and at all places. Exhibitors are expected to do the herdsmanship. (5) Exhibitors share of alley area kept clean. Wheelbarrows kept outside.

SHOWMANSHIP

All 4-H members exhibiting livestock are encouraged to enter showmanship. Pre-entry is required to enter these contests. There will be divisions for age for each livestock specie.

4-H Showmanship contestants will be required to use their own animals in Showmanship classes.

Information relative to judging 4-H Showmanship classes can be found in "The Guide For Evaluating Livestock Showmanship Contests(4-H357) for Beef, Sheep and Swine: "Scorecard for Judging, Fitting and Showing Contest" (EC2-57-82) for Dairy projects; and the Nebraska 4-H Horse Show and Judging Guide (4-H373) for horse shows and Guidelines for Nebraska 4-H Dogs Shows (4-H 19) for dogs.

Judging will be based on preparation of the animal, apparent training and the appearance and behavior of the showman.

Cleanliness, grooming and presentation of the animal and club member's alertness will be major areas judged.

Showmanship classes and premiums are listed in the "Departments" of each species.

BEEF: Senior- G10 Div 9 Class 1; Intermediate- G10 Div 9 Class 2; Junior G10 Div 9 Class 3

SHEEP: Senior-G30 Div 9 Class 1; Intermediate- G10 Div 30 Class 2; Junior G10 Div 30 Class 3.

SWINE: Senior G35 Div 9 Class 1; Intermediate G35 Div 9 Class 2; Junior G35 Div 9 Class 3

Any 4-H Member enrolled in the 4-H Light Horse Project in Phelps or Gosper County is eligible to enter and compete in this show.

The County Fair 4-H Horse Show will use the rules of the "Nebraska 4-H Horse Show and Judging Guide" (4-H 373) as to Objectives, Requirements, General Show Rules, Tack and Attire and Standard Class Score sheets. All additional rules and regulations governing the 4-H Horse Show will be those of the host county. Gosper County will host the 4-H Horse Show in even numbered years, Phelps County will host in odd numbered years. The 2008 Phelps-Gosper 4-H Horse Show will be in Gosper County.

The recognition program for the Phelps-Gosper County Fair 4-H Horse Show will be that of the host County. Premiums will be paid 4-H members by the county program in which they are enrolled.

When hosted by Phelps County, championship performances in the three age divisions of Showmanship, plus Champion Mare and Champion Gelding will be awarded recognition items at the time of the show. Championship performances in all other classes will be designated on a single item of recognition and awarded to the contestant at a later date (ie. The 4-H Achievement Banquet of the contestant to be recognized.) To be eligible for championship recognition the performance must be of Purple or Blue Ribbon quality as designated by the judge for the day. There is an entry deadline. Late entries will be allowed to participate, but not be awarded ribbons or premiums at the superintendent's discretion.

When hosted by Gosper County, championship and reserve championship performances in all classes will be designated on a single item of recognition to be awarded to the contestant at a later date (ie. The 4-H Achievement Banquet of the contestant to be recognized.) Classes listed as a part of the County Fair 4-H Horse Show will be judged according to the procedure outlined in the standard score sheets listed in the "Nebraska 4-H Horse Show and Judging Guide".

Each 4-H member may enter and use a maximum of five (5) horses. No member may enter two horses in the same performance class. No horse may be used by two riders in showmanship classes or the same performance class. The same horse can be used in all events.

Stallions must be foaled during the calendar year of the show. Older intact male animals will not be allowed to show.

Competitive divisions for the performance classes and showmanship will be broken by the age of the exhibitors on Jan. 1 of the current calendar year.

Four-H members participating in Division G69-Stock Events must be Level II or higher and have a Waiver of Liability signed by the exhibitor and parent on file at entry time to be eligible to compete. Pre-entry is required to assure roping stock availability.

Rules will be enforced by the 4-H Horse Committee in charge of the County Fair 4-H Horse Show. Those rules dealing with safety, sportsman-ship and humane treatment of animals and people are to be monitored most closely.
